On a fall Saturday in which teams across the country lock in battle against bitter rivals, The University of Miami Hurricanes traveled to Tampa, FL to meet up with the University of South Florida Bulls. There is no rivalry despite what the press said all week, and despite what the ESPN announcers parroted during the pre-game promos. USF’s football program is barely a decade old. The two teams had faced off only on one occasion prior to yesterday’s contest. I guess that’s why the word hype comes from the word hyperbole.
Despite the exaggerated backstory, the game held certain significance for both teams. Miami, having vastly improved year by year, is on the verge of completing a 10 win season. USF, a program desperately seeking national legitimacy, saw an opportunity to knock off a big name on a national stage. In the end, the severely depleted Hurricanes were able to do as they wished throughout much of the game. USF clearly was overmatched on all fronts despite the efforts of their Vick-like QB.
Next up for The U is a bowl game. Early predictions point to a January 1, 2010 matchup with the West Virginia Mountaineers in the Gator Bowl, held in Jacksonville, FL. Miami and West Virginia have a history – having played together often during Miami’s time in the Big East. The Mountaineers are coming off a big win against the #8 ranked Pittsburgh Panthers.
Saturday also brought in the unveiling of a new uniform for the Canes. Miami and several other top tier programs wore the new Nike Pro Combat uniform system. I do not know how I feel at this point about the new look other than it grew on me as the day progressed. I really like how they incorporated the whole split-U graphical convention into the numbering system – its iconic. Its sparse use of accent colors was also very well executed. I think I am still partial to the more colorific orange and green unies however.
More info on the new uniforms and a cool audio introduction are available on the Nike Pro Combat website.

Couldn’t resist posting this awesome display of statistical genius created by our friends at Fox’s affiliate in Chicago.
For those who may not see the gaffe… A pie chart represents 100% of any given sample. The individual slices are meant to show a percentage of the whole – thus their sum should equal 100%, not the 193% indicated by the Fox News chart. Maybe this represents the GOP Candidate percentages found in Foxnewsistan?

Thanks to a link on our Art Director’s blog, I came across these fantastic pixel based illustrations of 80′s TV Heroes. I love pixel-based, 8-bit, and isometric graphics, so these illustrations tickle me in a very special way.
Head on over to the http://www.veryimportantpixels.com/website where you can view the collection in its entirety and even purchase a T-Shirt with a design of your choosing…

I’m leaving Jackson, MS tomorrow afternoon for a much needed respite from work with Alice and Chance to my former home, Miami, FL. Very excited to spend some time w/ my mom, dad and sister, as well as show Al and Chance Miami for the first time.
We’ve got a nice little itinerary which includes eating cuban food at Sergio’s or La Carreta, taking an airboat ride in the everglades to check out some gators, attending the University of Miami Hurricanes football game, eating an early Thanksgiving turkey w/ my family, attending a Miami Heat game, and of course hitting the H20 weather permitting over on Key Biscayne.
Hope to post lots of photos of our adventures upon my return to Jackson, MS next week where I will be at work Tues/Wed and then have another 4 solid days vacation.

In this second part to Sodderberg’s Che biopic, we follow our beloved Che as he moves from Cuba to the South American continent where he attempts to sow the seeds of rebellion amongst the pobres of Bolivia. Benicio Del Toro is again excellent in his portrayal of Che Guevara. He is an amazing actor and was completely believable.
In part two, Che’s revolutionary fervor gets old. As he tires so does his rhetoric. The dreams of armed revolution as a means of fomenting change amongst the masses soon seem as grandiose as a child’s wish to be king. Applying the model of the Cuban revolution in Andean Bolivia didn’t work and the result is a sad end to a character Sodderberg made endearing in Che: Part 1.
Che’s excursions into the Bolivian countryside reeked of a boy scout outing when the scale of such an audacious campaign required a bona-fide armies. I still felt for the guy. Most anyone who critically reads Marx’s Capital has to accept that capitalism creates certain inherent systematic inequalities. I for one find some of these inequalities immoral. However I may feel about the need to ameliorate the plight of those less fortunate, I can not agree with Che’s methods – or at least the methods depicted in this film. In the end, the revolutionaries take on a parasitic role that prey on the very people they originally aimed to help.
